A Pinot that blew me away….now that rarely happens

Just a quick note to bring your attention to Evening Land Vineyards (ELV), a fairly large operation with wineries in Burgundy, Oregon and also here in the Santa Rita Hills – they specialize in Pinot Noir and make some Chardonnay as well.

Their tasting room will be opening in a little over a month’s time, on March 4th, in the Wine Ghetto…more information to follow on this as I am sure it will be a great event.

In the meantime below, is a tasting note of my favorite of their local Pinots. The grapes are sourced from a beautifully tended vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills AVA, called Tempest. Take note of this name, as the names of Burgundy vineyards are remembered and each vintage chronicled, I believe one day too wine drinkers will look back upon the different vintages of the Tempest, comparing intricate differences between the years.

2009 Evening Land Vineyard, Tempest, Pinot Noir -
Dense, concentrated cherry fruit on the nose. Perfumed scents
of violets and rose petals. Minerality too in the form of pencil
shavings. Palate is well balanced with crunchy cranberry flavors.
Long lasting refreshing finish.

$60, online at ELV store, also a lot of ELV’s wines are available
at the Winehound at various price points

I seem to write about Pinot a lot, even though it’s not my fav grape

The story of Sanford Winery isn’t a happy one, but a story nonetheless told time and time again through the history of wine.  Sanford was one of the top Pinot Noir producers in Santa Barbara for much of the late 80’s and 90’s.  Richard Sanford set up the organic vineyard and to cut a long story short….the place ended up going to the man.

However, all is not lost – because the vineyards are still in operation and the grapes bought by the very famous winery Au Bon Climat, (aka ABC).

Au Bon Climat (ABC) Pinot Noir

I tried the ABC Sanford & Benedict recently and was quickly reminded of how good the Pinot in Santa Barbara is, especially from the popular Santa Rita Hills…although it still has some time there is lots of cherry, some herbs and a savoury, velvet-like palate. The wine does come at a price though, averaging about £25.  Find it though, and you should be happy.  Here are some agents that sell it online, found them on wine-searcher.com also Berry Bros sells a lot of the ABC range.

Awesome wine of the week!

Tasted through loads of New Zealand and Burgundian wines this week…so have lots to tell.

But as a quickie recommendation try this Kiwi Pinot out -  Carrick Unravelled Pinot Noir 2008.

Carrick Unravelled Pinot Noir Central Otago 2008

Carrick is a well established winery in Central Otago on the Southern bit of NZ south island(maybe the world?).

So, why did I like this guy? Well for starters, the price!  At £12.50 this wine is a bargain from a region notorious for tres cher Pinot.  Great Western Wine in Bath are the importers and you can buy it online here.

As for the wine, it has loads of expressive mixed berry fruit of cranberry and lots of cherries with a vibrant earthy palate – high alc @ 14% but overall a good Pinot Noir that will defo stand up to a variety of dishes from Peking duck to chorizo sausages.

Oh, check this out, just got off the phone with Great Western Wine to double-check price and it is normally £12.50 but is now on offer for £10.95!  That is a ridiculously good price!! Honestly buy now.  Again here’s the link. I would but I’m just a lowly messenger :-(
